WOMENS HEALTH

Ibandronic acid and osteoporosis (women s health)

Osteoporosis is loss of bone mass due to decreased estrogen levels, so it usually occurs especially in women who have entered the menopausal stage. Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs used to treat this condition. Ibandronic acid is one of them.

Estrogens and corticosteroids

The bone loss at menopause often cause fractures that are not only painful but can endanger the woman's life. Sometimes prolonged treatment based on corticosteroids, which aim to improve other health conditions can trigger this problem.

Oral or intravenous

Ibandronic acid can be consumed in capsule or through intravenous injections. The decision as to which route of administration used depends on several factors:
Adherence to treatment: this medicine intestinal side effects that tend to discourage some women use.
Level of bone loss: if the tissue that makes up the bone has deteriorated to a point where fractures are most likely be preferred orally, because this provides a greater benefit of the drug. Between 40% and 50% of active component will be fixed to the bone-forming cells, unlike what occurs with the injections.

Comprehensive approach

It is common to hear recommendations revolve around the consumption of calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis, which also apply to the treatment of this condition.
The best results achieved with ibandronic acid are accompanied by programs that include components referred to above - calcium and vitamin D - thereby avoiding an accelerated loss of bone mass and reduces the risk of fractures in the legs, hips or wrists, some of the places that suffer with osteoporosis.

Other measures

Physical activity is relevant for the treatment of osteoporosis. Do resistance or looking for wellness (wellness of mind, body and spirit) will have a positive impact, defined as the increase in bone density. Some examples are walking, swimming or practicing tai-chi
